Your hands can become a great focus point to direct your cleansing breaths.
A regular practice of sets of 3 cleansing breaths can help you refresh yourself, calm yourself and redirect your attention even briefly.

Cupping your hands
Bring your hands together and create a cup. Notice the characteristics of your hands. Have you taken a moment to look at your hands recently and notice the uniqueness of them?
Hands hold wisdom, experience and insight when we pause to appreciate them. With compassion you can express gratitude for the infinite number of ways your hands help you in life every day. This creates a focal point for your attention, as you inhale and exhale 3 deep cleansing breaths. You don’t have to breathe into the cup your hands created, in fact direct your breath over your hands and out into the universe.

Where does my breath go?
Our breathing is automatic most of the time unless we consciously slow down our breathing to enhance our awareness of the process of inhaling and exhaling. This might seem like a silly question, but quickly posing this question may be yet another strategy for increasing your awareness of your breathing and surroundings. What a great opportunity to dream and imagine where your breath might be going. So many possibilities from the simplicity of the breath coming in and going out in the air, to a way to use your imagination for anything, from escaping from what is right in front of you to a fantasy that carries you off somewhere magical.

Experiencing Peace
Indulge yourself and release yourself into the process. Slowing down your breathing alone can create waves of calm in even the tensest situation. You could say that peace is just a few breaths away or even in the blink of an eye. If you add a few more sets of 3 cleansing breaths, you may be able to stretch out the serenity that can accompany your purposeful breathing.

Making mindfulness a regular practice
The practice of intentionally breathing can bring you into the present moment, increase your awareness of where you are, how you are feeling and what you might want or need at a particular time. Personal commitment to taking deep cleansing breaths will increase your mindfulness awareness and you are bound to have more opportunities to “Hold Peace.”
